Saturday Oct 4: Matcha Mindfulness: Cultivating Sensory Awareness through the Way of Tea

Saturday, October 4, 10:00am – 12:15pm
In-person only at IMC
Offered by: Nancy Hamilton
Capacity is limited, advance registration requested

Mindfulness of the body is a rich area of Buddhist practice. It is also foundational to chadō, or the Way of Tea, a collaborative practice of generosity and openness in which embodied awareness paves the way for deep connection, perception, and communication.

As participants to a tea gathering, we will explore how mindful attention to sensory experience prepares the mind and heart for deep connection with our fellow participants, with the setting for tea, and with the objects we encounter along the way.

This morning tea experience will open with a guided meditation and a brief introduction to tea practice, after which guests will progress through the IMC garden to a tearoom created within the IMC community hall. Each person will be our valued guest and will receive a confection and a freshly whisked bowl of matcha while joining in the collaborative flow of discovery as the tea gathering unfolds. The morning will include opportunities for questions as well as for sharing in small groups.

This tea gathering is offered by Nancy Hamilton, an instructor of Japanese tea practice, and her fellow practitioners in the Urasenke tradition of tea.

The program is offered freely. Capacity is limited, so we kindly ask you to register in advance here. If you would like to donate to the teacher or the center, feel free to visit IMC’s donation page.
