Yoga and Meditation Half-Day Retreat

January 2, 2016, 9am-12:30pm

After the busyness of the holidays, this mini-retreat offers a quiet and grounding place where we can slow down, deepen our meditation, connect with our bodies, and reflect on our intentions for the coming year. No experience is necessary. We will alternate between meditation in movement and in stillness. You do not have to be flexible to do yoga or have a particular body type; you need only to be as you are. Gentle postures invite deep opening, relaxation and rejuvenation. Seated meditation will be both guided and silent. Bring a large towel. Yoga mats are available or bring your own.

Thanksgiving Day invites us to reflect upon the good in our lives, and to appreciate our good fortune. Even if we are feeling sad, low, grumpy or just not particularly fortunate, coming together in the stillness of meditation and the movement of yoga can revitalize our acceptance, gratitude and joy. Appropriate for beginners to yoga or meditation, as well as those with more experience. Bring a large towel and sticky mat, if you have one.

Yoga and Meditation Half-Day Retreat

In this retreat we will develop a continuity of awareness in movement and in stillness. Our focus will be on the first three foundations of mindfulness: mindfulness of the body, of feelings or sensations, and of mental processes. We will integrate guided and silent meditation, moving meditation (yoga poses), breath work, and relaxation, and let the synergy of these practices inform and deepen one another to open heart and mind.

The retreat is appropriate for beginners to either yoga or meditation as well as more experienced yogis and meditators. You do not have to be flexible to do yoga, nor to have a particular body type – you need only to be as you are. We will do simple seated, reclining, and standing movements. Yoga mats are available, but please bring your own if you have one, along with a large towel.

She began practicing yoga in 1984, and has been a student of Vipassana meditation since 1992. Trained in Iyengar style yoga, she also teaches at the California Yoga Center in Palo Alto. Her teaching is gentle, supportive, and sensitive to individual abilities.

Terry Lesser teaches Yoga for Meditation.  She has been practicing yoga since 1984, and has been teaching since 1995.  She trained in Iyengar yoga at the Yoga Room?s Advanced Studies/Teacher Training Program in Berkeley.  Terry has been practicing Vipassana Meditation since 1992, and is a graduate of the Community Dharma Leader program at Spirit Rock Meditation Center.Her focus is in the integration of mindfulness meditation and yoga.

Certainly we can be thankful for the precious opportunity to practice together. In silent sitting and movement, this morning is appropriate for all, regardless of experience. Yoga is not about having some special kind of yogi body. It is about letting go of ideas of how we should be or what we should do, and allowing ourselves to fully engage in the present moment. Then we are able to be grateful for and enjoy the body we have, just as it is. Please bring a large towel and yoga sticky mat. If you don’t have your own, mats are available.
