Householder Retreat with Andrea Fella: Sept 13 – 19

Integrating practice into our daily lives can be difficult. Many of us need support for this challenging but rewarding aspect of practice. We will integrate formal practice and Dharma discussion with our daily life by surrounding our usual workweek and workdays with practice & discussion. We begin with a half-day retreat with instructions and discussion on Sunday, and end with a daylong retreat on the following Saturday. During the week we will meet each morning and evening to inspire, encourage and support our daily life practice. You may participate in any part of the program. 

Householder Retreat Schedule:

Introduction to Mindfulness Meditation

Course Description:

This online course based on Gil Fronsdal’s six-week introduction to Mindfulness Meditation class.
It’s supplemented with written material, mindfulness exercises for bringing the practice into daily life, and reflective questions. Ines Freedman, as the online teacher for the course, provides further teachings and email guidance.
The course is not live, so it can be done at any time during the day, with support offered either by email or at pre-arranged times using Skype, telephone or Instant Messenger.
The course may also be audited without teacher support.

Following the Buddhist tradition that all teachings be given freely, there is no charge for this course. Donations are welcome.

Buddhism 101: A Course in the Buddha’s Teachings w/ Andrea Fella

Tuesdays, Sept. 22 to Oct 13: 7:30 to 9PM

A series on the fundamental teachings of the Buddha. This course is designed to provide an overview of the key concepts that are discussed at IMC. We will discuss both the theory and practice of the teachings, and they relate to our day-to-day lives.

This course is designed to provide an overview of the key concepts that are discussed in talks given at IMC. We will discuss both the theory and practice of the teachings, and how they relate to our day-to-day lives. The series will be focused around the topics of: the Four Noble Truths, the Three Basic Facts of Experience, Karma, and the Four Foundations of Mindfulness. Through an exploration of these topics, we will touch most of the key teachings of the Buddha.

Dancing with Life by Phil Moffitt: This book explores the Four Noble Truths and the associated 12 insights. See below for the Amazon editorial review.  The website for this book, http://www.dancingwithlife.org has more information including excerpts, the table of contents and an introductory talk by Phil Moffitt.

Dancing with Life is available through Amazon for a $16.47 (new) with used copies starting at $12.  It is available in the local libraries.  I haven’t checked local bookstores.

HOMEWORK AND FORMAT: We are currently planning to spend four months reading Dancing with Life: one Noble Truth per month.

Two Week Retreat at the Hidden Villa with Gil Fronsdal

September 13 to 27, 2009

This is a silent mindfulness retreat for experienced meditators who are comfortable with  periods of independent practice.  Instruction, Dharma talks, and interviews with Gil will  support the meditator’s independent insight practice. The retreat will be conducted at the  Hidden Villa Hostel near Los Altos.

Prerequisite: This retreat is for practitioners with previous Vipassana residential  retreat experience and who have checked in with Gil Fronsdal about participation.

Dormitory-style sleeping or camping.  Vegetarian meals.

Cost: This retreat is offered entirely on a dana or freely given basis.  The teachers and  cook will be serving without compensation, and the operational costs of the retreat  (mostly for facility rental and food) will be paid from the Retreat Fund of the Insight  Meditation Center (IMC). At the end of the retreat, participants may offer whatever dana  or donation they wish to the teachers, the cook, and the IMC Retreat Fund. A refundable  $250 deposit is required to reserve a space. Your deposit will be refunded if you attend  the retreat, or if you cancel six weeks before the retreat, by August 2, 2009.
